“Block: 2731 Plot: 97” is a series of works photographed in my mother’s home after her passing, during a major family crisis. The work traces the physical and emotional fragments left behind in the house—the disconnected cables, the objects removed from the walls, and the empty spaces, all reflecting the absence and the loss of home and family. The photographs document the silence left in the spaces, the emptiness that arises after a loved one departs, and the objects that remain as markers of a presence that is no longer present.
The writings on the walls, which I inscribed after her death, reflect part of my mourning process, consisting of conflicting emotions of anger, sadness, guilt, and the need to continue speaking with someone who is no longer here. Writing on the wall became a tangible way for me to revive the connection and dialogue, even after her death, as I grappled with the emotions evoked by her loss.
In addition to the photographs, the work includes video pieces documenting Sisyphean actions that reflect a constant repetition of efforts doomed to fail—repeated attempts to open the door of the house without success, alongside attempts to write something on a piece of Bristol paper that never materialize. All of these are presented in an ongoing loop, illustrating the feeling of being unable to move forward.
This work delves deeply into the sense of loss and how the simple objects left behind continue to tell a story—they reveal how the presence of the deceased lingers, blurring the boundary between the living and the dead, in a space where loss and memory merge.
