In August 2021, a widespread forest fire broke out in the Jerusalem hills. The fire started in multiple locations near the Beit Meir settlement and later spread to Tzova, Givat Ye’arim, Ein Nakuba, and Ein Rafa. This fire is considered the largest in the Jerusalem hills and is believed to have been caused by deliberate arson. During the fire, approximately 3,460 acres of forest land were consumed, and many residents were evacuated from their homes, including patients at the Eitanim Psychiatric Hospital.
This series traces the remnants of the fire, reflecting on destruction and restoration, the growth that can emerge from pain, the personal and collective trauma, and the potential to create something new from the ashes.
